Union Yes! Why a Union?

Why a Union?

Unions are making a difference. With most of the economic benefits of our economy going to corporate America, working people are using the power of a union contract to get their fair share.

Workers never got anything without bargaining for it.

  • The 40-hour work week
  • The 8-hour workday
  • Overtime
  • Sick Leave
  • Paid Vacations
  • Pensions
  • Safety and Health protections
  • Grievance procedure for wrongful discharge and discipline
  • Fairness in promotions
  • Seniority

You Are the Union

At UFCW 555, you are the union. You come together with your co-workers; you nominate and elect union officers; you determine the working conditions that will be bargained in a contract; you will be part of a larger movement to improve the lives of working men and women in the workplace and in their communities.

In a Union there is strength in numbers. Without a union you have only a few rights such as minimum wage, overtime after 40 hours, and unemployment insurance. With a Union, you enjoy numerous other benefits guaranteed in a union contract, such as;

  • Negotiated wages
  • Employer paid pension
  • Defined work schedules
  • Grievance procedures
  • Job security & Seniority rights
  • Protection from unfair treatment & favoritism by the boss.
